Launch of the 2019 COMESA Trade Statistics Report

COMESA’s nominal export trade grew by 6% from US$ 107 billion in 2017 to US$ 113 Billion in 2018. This increase was partially attributable to higher prices for cobalt hydroxide whose upward price peaked between March and May 2018. In value terms, Democratic Republic of Congo’s exports of cobalt hydroxide increased by over 100% in 2018 compared to 2017. Prices for cobalt ore, copper and nickel also increased in 2018, boosting the export values for countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe and DRC. Oil prices rose in most of 2018 but declined by 25% between October and December 2018. On average this led to the observed 4% decline in export values of fuels from the region in 2018 for fuel exporting countries Egypt, Libya and Sudan. Increased demand for Egyptian and Tunisian manufactures also led to the observed higher export values in 2018.
