International migration of people according to the UNHRC indicates that movement was determined by among other factors the desire to find a secure livelihood, natural disasters, population pressure and economic recession. Inspite of the various interventions by the world organisation like UNHRC and IOM in creating a sustainable environment for migrants, migrants continue to find themselves in harsh conditions and the number continues to be on the riise. Refugees and asylum seekers for example continue to find themselves as victims of human rights violation in Africa.

Though the refugees and asylum seekers (as %age of International Migrant Stock) in COMESA fluctuated substantially in the recent past years, it tended to increase through 2010-2015 period by 58% before dropping to end at 27.24% in mid year 2017. The International Migration report 2017 explains that

Between 2000 and 2017, the refugees and asylum seekers (as %age of International Migrant Stock) declined in 5 countries of Zambia, Burundi, DRC, Djibouti and Madagascar. In 2 of those countries, the drop in refugees and asylum seekers (as %age of International Migrant Stock) averaged over 70% in 2000-2017 period.

Refugee crisis in Africa according to the World Migration Report 2018 has continued to worsen  due to intractable conflicts, political and communal violence and peace building setbacks which have displaced million of people. For example,in 2016 over 1.4 million South Sudanese(a majority of whom were children) were displaced and forced into neighboring countries. Burundi, Eritrea and Ethiopia produced significant refugees or IDPs in that year.
